KELOWNA– Four local sporting events will benefit from $14,500 from the provincial government’s Hosting BC program.

  • BC Rugby Union: $7,500 for the Western Canadian Rugby Championships in Kelowna, coming up on August 2, 2015.

“These are small grants that pack a big economic punch,” says Norm Letnick, MLA for Kelowna-Lake Country. “These funds will help these four organizations host events that bring numerous athletes and spectators into our hotels, restaurants, and attractions, providing a nice economic boost to our region.”

“Kelowna is a great supporter and host of local sporting events, and these funds will help these groups carry out top-notch competitions,” says Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson. “As a former player, I particularly look forward to catching as many rugby matches as I can.”

“Participation in sports builds teamwork, discipline and excellence,” says Premier Christy Clark, MLA for Westside-Kelowna. “These events will help the athletes showcase their tremendous skills and sportsmanship. We welcome them to Kelowna and wish them the best of luck in their respective competitions.”

Across British Columbia, 38 events in 25 communities will share more than $125,000 in the latest round of Hosting BC grants, provided by the provincial government and administered by ViaSport.

Hosting BC funds competitive-level events that support long-term athlete development plans for B.C.’s Provincial Sport Organizations.

ViaSport is a not-for-profit organization created in 2011 as a legacy of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Its mandate is to increase awareness, opportunity and participation in sport across the province–at every stage of life and in every community.
