KELOWNA – MLAs Steve Thomson, Ben Stewart and Norm Letnick are inviting residents to submit nominations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. 12 distinguished Canadians from the region will be honoured. To be eligible, a person:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, but need not necessarily reside in Canada;
  • Have made a significant contribution to a particular province, territory, region or community within Canada, or an achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada; and
  • Be alive on February 6th, 2012, the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the Throne. The medal can be awarded posthumously, as long as the recipient was alive on that date.

Once the nomination process is complete, 12 deserving nominees will be selected by an independent panel of three selectors. For a nomination form, please contact a local constituency office, or visit one of the MLA websites listed below.  The deadline for submissions is Friday September 21.

Why this matters:

·         The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession.

·         The Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country, and serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.

·         60,000 deserving Canadians will be recognized.

 Quotes:

“There’s no shortage of distinguished Canadians in Kelowna and the Okanagan, many of whom would be deserving of recognition. But the Diamond Jubilee Medal is something truly special. ”

–          Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson

“Elected officials have the privilege of meeting many distinguished and accomplished people who have worked hard to improve their communities.  Through their achievements, these highly respected individuals have proven they have excelled in their field.”
